              According to the "Regulations on the Safety and Protection of Radioisotopes and Radiation Devices" (Order No. 449 of the State Council) regarding the classification management of radioactive sources, the Bureau has formulated the "Methods for the Classification of Radioactive Sources", which are now released.

              Classification of radioactive sources

              In accordance with the State Council Decree No. 449 "Regulations on the Safety and Protection of Radioisotopes and Radiation Devices", this classification of radioactive sources is formulated.

              I. Principles of Radioactive Source Classification

              With reference to the relevant International Atomic Energy Agency regulations, radioactive sources are classified into categories I, II, III, IV, and V from high to low according to their potential harm to human health and the environment. Exempt activity for this species.

              (1) Type I radioactive sources are extremely dangerous sources. Without protection, exposure to such sources can cause death in a few minutes to one hour;

              (2) Type II radioactive sources are high-risk sources. Without protection, exposure to such sources for hours to days can cause death;

              (3) Type III radioactive sources are dangerous sources. In the absence of protection, exposure to such sources can cause permanent damage to humans within a few hours, and can cause death in a few days to weeks;

              (4) Type IV radioactive sources are low-risk sources. Basically, it will not cause permanent damage to people, but it may cause recoverable temporary damage to people who are exposed to these radioactive sources for a long time and close distance;

              (5) Type V radioactive sources are extremely low-risk sources. Will not cause permanent damage to people.

              Classification of unsealed sources

              The above radioactive source classification principles apply to unsealed sources.

              Unsealed source workplaces are classified into Class A, Class B, and Class C according to the daily equivalent of the maximum amount of radionuclides. For specific classification standards, see "Ionizing Radiation Protection and Radiation Source Safety Standard" (GB 18871-2002).

              Class A non-sealed source workplace safety management refers to Class I radioactive sources.

              For safety management of Class B and C non-sealed source workplaces, refer to Class II and III radioactive sources.
